PSV have dropped points at home for the first time this season, when they met FC Twente for the third time this campaign. The score board showed 1-1 when the final whistle had gone. One point was enough, though, for PSV to clinch the unofficial winter championship title.42 pointsPSV have collected 42 points from their eighteen league games and they had to settle for a draw for the third time this season. They enjoyed a narrow 0-1 win in this season’s reverse encounter and last week they made sure of an emphatic 3-0 cup tie win against FC Twente. PSV will be on top of the standings when the winter break sets in; they have scored 37 goals and conceded 12. FC Twente had drawn up a clever match plan and they nicked one point in the Eindhoven Philips Stadium for the first time in six seasons. AZ and Feyenoord cannot leapfrog over PSV any more, so the Eindhoven outfit can pride themselves of being 'winter champions'.The crowd did not enjoy a great many entertaining moments during the first forty-five minutes of the last domestic league game of 2005.PSV controlled proceedings, but the team coached by Guus Hiddink did not finish clinically. Koné and Cocu got the best opportunities to break the deadlock, but they missed and fired shots off-target. The visitors from Enschede created hardly any chances, but yet they managed to open the scoring. Kennedy Bakircioglu created some space five minutes from half time and he struck a well-placed shot past Gomes; 0-1. Having bagged this crucial goal, FC Twente kept on playing a well-organized defense and PSV found it hard to find an opening and breech the wall of tough and sturdy FC Twente defenders. Cocu levelerPSV had to up a few gears and that’s what they did straight from the kick-off of the second period. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink immediately earned a chance. Guus Hiddink had meanwhile brought on two players at half time: Mika Väyrynen came on to replace Eric Addo and Jefferson Farfán was brought on for DaMarcus Beasley, so that Phillip Cocu was positioned in the heart of defence. PSV never ceased chasing up their opponents and the bombardment paid off when the equalizer was scored twenty minutes from final time. Goalkeeper Boschker did well to stop a fierce shot delivered by Vennegoor of Hesselink, but he did not stand a chance, when captain Cocu fired home the rebound into the roof of the net: 1-1.Final offensivePSV tasted blood and piled up the pressure even more and FC Twente did not start any single moves. Ten minutes from final time Gerald Sibon left the bench for Arouna Koné to strengthen the offensive options. The tall forward picked out Michael Lamey with his first touch. The defender unleashed a tremendous shot that rattled the bar and bounced back some twenty yards unto the pitch. PSV bravely continued their siege, but were not able to score the winning goal.PSV have maintained their unbeaten homerun, but dropped two precious points on a cold wintry night. The players will have a few days off, but will resume in the first week op January to prepare for the first league game of the new year, away against Sparta Rotterdam.
