AZ have leapfrogged Feyenoord and moved into second place in the Dutch Eredivisie table. AZ beat their nearest challengers Feyenoord 1-0 in the Alkmaar Hout on Sunday afternoon, thanks to a second half goal by Shota Arveladze.Perez en Van Galen started on the bench; both players were rested for next Wednesday night’s cup tie against PSV. The hosts were the better team during the first period, but Feyenoord earned the best chances. A shot delivered by former AZ defender Vlaar was cleared off the line by Schaars. Kalou rattled the post and Kuyt fired across the goal, when he was in a shooting position. Medunjanin was close to breaking the deadlock for AZ, but the half time score was still 0-0. Before the game was kicked off a most impressive one minute silence was observed in fond memory of the daughter Feyenoord player Alfred Schreuder, who passed away last week. Feyenoord started the second period in the same vein. Paauwe’s header hit the post and Kuyt’s effort went just wide of the goal. Feyenoord were taught a lesson in efficiency on the hour mark, when AZ took advantage of some sloppy Feyenoord defending. Paauwe and goalkeeper Aerts were in each other’s way, when Landzaat took a free kick and Arveladze said thank you very much; 1-0. The hosts held on, although substitute van Hooijdonk earned a great opportunity and as a Feyenoord appeal for a penalty following a foul on Castelen was waved away. With five league games to go, PSV still maintain the lead. They have a nine-point cushion over second places AZ and the gap with Feyenoord is now ten points. PSV will take on AZ next Wednesday night in the semi-final of the Gatorade Cup.
