For a long time it looked like Australia would slip to defeat against Japan in their opening game, but when Guus Hiddink had brought on Cahill and Kennedy, the Socceroos managed to clinch an historic 3-1 victory in Kaiserslautern after all. Substitute Cahill scored a double and Aloisi put the icing on the cake.Golden substitutionAustralia owe Tim Cahill for their First World Cup victory ever. He tapped home from close range the 1-1 equalizer five minutes from final time and in the closing stages Cahill again and John Aloisi made sure of an incredible 3-1 win. It was not the finest of games, but Australia have rather unexpectedly bagged three points from their opening game. Japan had taken the lead by Nakamaru, when goalkeeper Schwarzer seemed to be impeded, but the referee waved away Hiddink’s violent protests. Australia snatched victory in the final five minutes, though. Japan goalkeeper Kawaguchi did well to deny Mark Viduka and Mark Bresciano and was well on his way to becoming the hero of Japan, but Everton midfielder Cahill had different ideas. He put his team on top by delivering a shot that went home off the inside of the post and Aloisi calmly finished after a mazy run through the Japanese defence.
