Former PSV coach Dick Advocaat guided South Korea to a 2-1 win over Togo in their World Cup opening game. Switzerland, captained by Johann Vogel, drew 0-0 with France and Brazil beat Croatia 1-0. Brazil Brazil, who had included former PSV striker Ronaldo in their starting line up, started their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win. They may be favourites to clinch their sixth World Cup, but they were given a tough time by Croatia. Brazil created few chances and Kaka was the only player to find the net. His superb goal, scored just before half time, meant that Brazil are the first team to win eight successive matches in the World Cup finals. It would be unfair to only draw the conclusion that the Brazilians did not play the best of games. Croatia, coached by Zlatko Kranjcar put in a fine performance and threatened a few times after the break in particular. The most exciting moment in the closing stages was created by a man wearing a Croatian shirt who managed to enter the pitch. Dick AdvocaatDick Advocaat was quite relieved, following the 2-1 win that South Korea had earned over Togo. “We felt nervous during the first period, but I think the win was deserved.” Advocaat announced that the Asians, who fielded Ji-Sung Park and Young-Pyo Lee, had won their opening game by playing four strikers, when they were trailing 1-0 “We put in a poor first half performance. They scored the opening goal when we were sloppy in defence. We played four strikers after the break and took some risks. Our confidence was restored and I feel we deserved this crucial win. We know that we will be competing at least until the final group game”, explained Advocaat. Substitute Jung-Hwan Ahn scored the winning goal in a rather uneventful game. Johann VogelFrance had a disappointing start to their campaign. The goalless draw with Switzerland was not in line with expectations and the same goes for the level of their game. As the Swiss lacked creativity, the game was quite boring. The underdogs actually created the best chances. Philippe Senderos just failed to connect with a Tranquillo Barnetta free kick and goalkeeper Fabien Barthez denied substitute Daniel Gygax a late-gasp winner.
