PSV have concluded their week in England in style: they beat Newcastle United 2-3. The team coached by Ronald Koeman put in an impressive performance during the first sixty minutes. The squad will fly home tonight. "I am satisfied", announced Ronald Koeman after the game. "We concluded this week quite well. The players are fit and I feel we can still make progress. We work hard to gradually reach a high level and this victory is morale boosting at this stage of the pre-season preparations”, explained the PSV head coach. “Newcastle United are a quality side and we knew we would be properly tested for the first time in the pre-season campaign. We had a great training camp, we enjoyed victory tonight and now that the newcomers have adapted, we are on the right track.”A 20, 000 crowd at St. James’ Park saw PSV start brightly. Phillip Cocu, André Ooijer, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who resumed training last week, were all included in the starting line-up. PSV dominated proceedings and played attacking football. Farfán put PSV ahead after 16 minutes, after he pounced on a rebound and tapped home from close range. Newcastle hardly ever threatened, although new signing Damien Duff had some nice touches. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink doubled the advantage for PSV on the verge of half time with a well-struck shot. Michael Lamey delivered a cross from the right and VOH coolly finished: 0-2. Koeman made five changes at half time. Carlos Salcido, who also resumed training only last week, was handed his debut. Four minutes after the break Jason Culina blasted home the third goal and PSV had virtually wrapped up the game. The Eindhoven outfit continued to dominate until the hour mark, when United came to life. PSV felt the effects of the physically demanding training sessions and the series of substitutions. Shola Ameobi pulled one back and Albert Luque converted a penalty, following an alleged foul in the box committed by Eric Addo. But the Magpies could not avoid defeat, so PSV have extended their unbeaten pre-season run. Ronald Koeman was content with the way PSV had played, especially during the first sixty minutes. "We moved well over the pitch and were completely in control. Newcastle play football the English way and we used the space. We could not keep up the high level in the final thirty minutes, as we were tired and a great many substitutions were brought on. But we put in a decent performance in the first sixty minutes and were frequently able to keep possession for long spells. Bearing in mind that quite a few players started training only last week, I am content with the progress we are making."
