PSV came back from a goal down to secure a 3-1 win over Willem II in Tilburg on Saturday night, thanks to a first half double from Mendez and a penalty converted by Farfán. Dream start Edison MendezEdison Mendez will always cherish fond memories of the first game ever he played with PSV. The Ecuadorian immediately made his mark by scoring a crucial first-half double. PSV were 3-1 on top at half time, as Farfán converted a penalty on the stroke of half time, after Ibrahim Kargbo had handled the ball and had been dismissed. Ronald Koeman guided his team to the second win from their three opening games. The first half was an entertaining and action-packed affair. The game was less spectacular after the break. Willem II, reduced to ten men, had given up hope to put off a result and PSV were content, realising they will face Liverpool next Tuesday. Short-lived Willem II leadCarlos Salcido and Eric Addo were partners in the heart of defence to replace Alex, who had reported sick on Saturday morning. Jan Kromkamp was handed a debut as full right back; Michael Reiziger filled in as left back and PSV coach Ronald Koeman played Afellay up front on the right wing. Willem II had a bright start, when Mohamed Messoudi superbly curled a free kick past goalkeeper Gomes on only eight minutes. PSV soon leveled the score, though. Six minutes later Cocu took a free kick, Simons headed the ball through and when the Willem II defenders could not clear, Mendez tapped home from close range; 1-1. In the 21st minute The Ecuadorian international again found the net. Koné set him up with a clever through ball. Mendez produced an effort that beat the keeper and hit the inside of both posts before it went home; 1-2. Jefferson FarfánWillem II threatened a few times and Mounir El Hamdaoui came close to an equaliser. Yet PSV had a two-goal cushion when the half-time whistle went. Kargbo, standing on the line, blocked a Farfán shot with his hand. Referee Bossen quickly showed him red and Farfán himself perfectly converted the spot kick, wrapping the game virtually up. After the interval Willem II knew it was all over and PSV leaned back. Koné, Cocu, who hit the bar with a header, and substitute Culina earned some chances, but no more goals were scored. Assistant coach Tonny Bruins Slot was in England to watch the Champions League opponent Liverpool in the derby against Everton. Voor PSV will now fully focus on next Tuesday night when they kick off a tenth consecutive Champions League campaign against Liverpool.
