PSV could only make sure of a cup win against the amateur side Kozakken Boys, after Koné and Simons had scored goals in the closing stages. PSV have reached the next round, but the hosts deserve a huge compliment for their brave and tough resistance. The half-time score was still 0-0 and that was a fair reflection of what had been going on for the past forty-five minutes. Patrick Kluivert and Edison Mendez threatened for PSV, but Kozakken Boys stuck up for themselves and held on. The home crowd erupted in applause, when defender Gregory Thijm earned a great opportunity in a one-to-one situation with keeper Oscar Moens, who did well to deny him. PSV played a very low tempo game and the amateurs side Kozakken Boys had organised a compact defence very well. PSV, who fielded Patrick Kluivert for the first time in their starting line-up, were expected to see off their opponents quickly, but the forwards lacked sharpness up front. There was a tremendous football atmosphere in the small town of Werkendam and the home fans did not stop singing and chanting. PSV upped a gear after the break and piled up the pressure. They still did not create a host of chances, so Koeman made two changes on the hour mark. Beerens and Väyrynen were brought on, when Tardelli and Aissati had been taken off. Arouna Koné finally broke the deadlock on 73 minutes. He cleverly created some space before delivering a superb fierce shot that curled away into the roof of the net. Keeper Duindam, who had pulled of a string of saves from earlier in the game, did not stand a chance. The game was virtually wrapped up on 82 minutes, when PSV earned a penalty. Jan Kromkamp was fouled in the box and captain Timmy Simons coolly converted the spot kick: 0-2. Kozakken Boys had been on equal terms with PSV for nearly seventy-five minutes and put in a great performance. PSV have progressed to the next phase and will be next in action Saturday night, when they make a trip to Den Haag to face ADO Den Haag.
