French vice champions Girondins de Bordeaux unveiled Johan Micoud as their most important signing during the summer transfer window. The creative left-footed player returned to Bordeaux, after having spent four seasons (1996-2000) in the town known for its vineyards before. He was instrumental in Bordeaux’s championship season 1998-1999. After he had left Bordeaux, the club had a few tough seasons. By finishing second last season behind unchallenged champions Lyon, they made sure of straight qualification to the Champions League group stages. The technical staff hopes that old hand Johan Micoud will guide the young midfielders during the tough Champions League games. Micoud has an impressive record to boast outside France. The 33-year-old midfield player wore the Pisa shirt in the Italian Serie A for two seasons, before he moved to Werder Bremen. The Frenchman scored 31 goals in 123 Bundesliga games. Werder won the double in Germany in 2004. Bremen seemed to pull off some stunning results in last season’s Champions League campaign, but were eventually eliminated by Juventus in the quarter finals. Micoud netted five goals in eight games in the most prestigious European tournament. Parma-PSV in 2001"I met PSV for two exciting games in 2002, when Parma took them on. PSV progressed to the next phase. I don’t know much about the team they field these days. I do know they met the likes of ASM (Monaco) and Lyon, but I was abroad at the time. PSV have a good team and they have competed in the Champions League for a great many seasons in a row. Some familiar players left them last summer and we’ll just have to wait and see how they have coped."And PSV will find out tomorrow night, whether the 33-year-old playmaker will be able to guide his team to successes in the same way as he did in the past.
