Edison Mendez has been shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or, the trophy awarded by France Football magazine to the best European player over the past 12 months. The 27-year-old midfielder is the only Eredivisie player to make the shortlist.The excellent performances which the only Ecuadorian player in Europe put in at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and his start with PSV have not gone unnoticed. The winner of the Ballon d’Or, chosen in the magazine's annual poll of selected journalists from around the world, who pick from a shortlist of 50, will be announced on 28 November. Arjen Robben is the only Dutch player among the 50 candidates to be named by France Football. The Brazilian Ronaldinho won the most prestigious award in world football last season.
