It took a long time before Mateja Kezman scored his first Premiership goal for Chelsea FC. This afternoon his long goal drought was over, when the former PSV striker superbly converted a penalty kick in injury time in the league game at home against Newcastle United. Chelsea played hosts to the team of Patrick Kluivert at Stamford Bridge. It was a rather uneventful affair in the first period and neither team managed to break the deadlock. In the break Chelsea manager José Mourinho intervened and Didier Drogba, who returned from injury, came on. Fifteen minutes after the restart the Portuguese brought on another substitute; this time it was Mateja Kezman who left the bench. The Serb Montenegrin immediately had an impact on the game. He was the first player that was involved in a flowing move. Midfielder Frank Lampard was the last and scored the opener from close range. Soon afterwards Drogba rounded two defenders before he produced a low curling finish past Newcastle keeper Shay Given; 2-0. Kezman was close to adding a third goal. He perfectly controlled a Damien Duff pass, but his fiery shot hit the inside of the post and then went back unto the pitch again. It was another former PSV forward who netted the third goal. Arjen Robben, who put up a poor first half performance, was in great shape in the second period. Duff found Robben who started a fine solo run. With two minutes left he first rounded Bowyer; then he turned inside Hughes and scored his fifth goal of the season in the service of Chelsea. Chelsea earned a penalty kick in injury time, when Duff was fouled in the box. Kezman stepped up to take it and when he had surprised keeper Given with a cool, Panenka-like chip, he took the celebrations from his team mates for his first Premiership goal.
