Bayern Munich still have a chance of progressing to the UEFA Champions League quarter finals, after former PSV midfielder <L CODE="C01">Mark van Bommel</L>, unexpectedly scored a goal, reducing the deficit to 3-2 in their clash with Real Madrid, with two minutes left.
Two teams that are having a poor run in their domestic leagues met at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night. The Spaniards, who put in a passionate display, started the game brightly, were the stronger side and fully deserved the win. Raúl, <L CODE="C02">Ruud van Nistelrooy</L> and David Beckham played a major part in the hosts’ 3-2 victory. Van Nistelrooy created Real Madrid’s opening goal after ten minutes. The Dutchman picked out Raúl with a clever through ball and the Spanish captain slotted the ball home; 1-0. Bayern leveled the score 13 minutes later, when the Brazilian defender Lucio placed a header past goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Soon afterwards Iván Helguera produced a looping header from a David Beckham corner that hit the far post. Raúl pounced on the rebound and simply nodded Real Madrid in front again. And eleven minutes before the break Van Nistelrooy was on the mark again. Helguera headed on a Beckham free kick and the Real striker volleyed home from close range; 3-1.
After the interval the crowd enjoyed a great many entertaining moments. Beckham rattled the bar and Claudio Pizarro, who had hit the post before, had an effort superbly saved by Casillas. Van Bommel provided a thrilling finish in the closing stages. The Dutchman superbly chested the ball down, before unleashing a powerful half-volley from the edge of the penalty area that beat goalkeeper Casillas: 3-2.
