PSV head coach Ronald Koeman gave credit to everyone of his players for showing fighting spirit and battling until the final whistle, but he also praised opponents FC Groningen for not giving PSV any space in behind. FC Groningen coach Ron Jans emphasized that just a momentary lapse of concentration had proved to be very costly.
“Playing counter attacking football, FC Groningen presented problems to us”, said Koeman at the post-match press conference. “We knew they would defend deeply and not give us any space. We did not play particularly well, but have worked hard until the final whistle, for which every one of my players deserves credit. But FC Groningen also deserve credit; they never gave us a moment to settle. It was just a question of making the first breakthrough. We have done it again, but I must admit we were fortunate in scoring a goal so late. However, we made most efforts to win the game. We will now turn our attention to Wednesday’s cup tie against NAC Breda.
Ron Jans’ counter-attacking game-plan was executed well. “I think we put in a fine display and have proved we are able to play counter attacking football. It’s a shame that we have suffered defeat. One momentary lapse of concentration proved to be very costly. Of course we know that Alex is strong in the air.” Jans explained that Levchenko, who marked Alex, had been withdrawn minutes before and that Sankoh, who had taken over from Levchenko, had failed to mark Alex closely, when the corner was taken. “Alex’s goal was harsh on us. We did not deserve to win, although Suárez sent an effort just wide of the goal ten minutes from time. But it’s too bad we are left empty-handed in the end”, Jans concluded.
