PSV’s search for the title goes on, after they earned a 2-0 win over RKC Waalwijk at the Philips Stadium on Saturday night. PSV, who were on the front foot from the first whistle and had virtually wrapped up the game after Farfán and Alcides had scored two goals in the opening stages, will now turn their attention on their UEFA Champions League First knockout round second leg against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. PSV made an electric start against third -bottom RKC Waalwijk. They outclassed their county fellows completely and after they had taken a 2-0 lead in the first forty-five minutes, they leaned back, showing little urgency to attack in the second half. PSV did not put in an entertaining display in Eindhoven on Saturday night, but succeeded in keeping their fifteenth clean sheet of the season. Ronald Koeman’s team showed their class against county fellows RKC Waalwijk in the first period, after which the second half was a mere formality. PSV’s closest rivals will be in action on Sunday afternoon, when Ajax take on Heerenveen and FC Utrecht play host to AZ.
Ronald Koeman had made several changes from the team that were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by NAC Breda in a midweek Dutch Cup tie. Cocu, Simons, Koné and Kromkamp returned to the starting line-up at the expense of Mendez, Culina, Väyrynen and Tardelli, while Sun, who was outstanding against NAC Breda, was handed a start. Alex partnered Salcido in the heart of defence, with Alcides playing at the left back position. Da Costa, ill with flu, had not been called up to the squad. PSV-RKC Waalwijk was never a close game. The hosts opened the scoring with only three minutes on the clock. Teixeira committed a foul on Farfán and the Peruvian striker superbly struck a trade mark free kick past goalkeeper Lemmens, taking his season’s tally to sixteen goals. The home fans at the Philips Stadium were given a scare, when Garcia collided into Gomes and the PSV stopper needed treatment. Fortunately the popular PSV keeper could carry on. Another Brazilian, Alcides, was the central figure after twenty minutes, after he had opened his scoring account for PSV. When a corner had been deviated off Alex, the ball fell to the defender, who unleashed a powerful shot to double PSV’s advantage; 2-0, putting the result beyond doubt. Sun Xiang had a fine effort on target that Lemmens saved well on the stroke of half time.
The second half was not an entertaining affair. RKC were unable to threaten and PSV were deep in thought, probably focusing on the return leg in London. The visitors created one chance, when former PSV striker Tim Janssen headed over the goal. Koeman took off Cocu and Afellay for Väyrynen and Culina, with the clock ticking on. Kromkamp, who was troubled by a hamstring problem, was taken off in the closing stages and Csaba Fehér stepped off the bench to replace him. A capacity crowd was not treated to an exciting game of football, but PSV were delighted with their 21st win of the season, ahead of their trip to London.
