Both coaches admitted at the post-match press conference that the Excelsior v PSV game had been anything but a great spectacle. PSV were unable to create openings and Excelsior took full advantage of the game plan made by their coach Ton Lokhoff.
“It was not a great game at all”, said Ronald Koeman at the post-match press conference. “We find it hard to create an opening when we meet teams that play a compact and well-organized defence. I played Cocu as a striker after the break, so Farfán would be able to cut into the box from the right flank. We also hoped to create chances by playing long balls, but we were not successful. Farfán got an opportunity, but he was not in great form today. We lacked cutting edge, but did not concede anything in defence, which is reflected in the final score.” Koeman blamed the hectic fixture list for the current injury crisis. The PSV head coach had already intimated in the winter stop that PSV would pay the price for playing a great many games. “It’s wonderful to participate in the UEFA Champions League, but it takes its toll. Fortunately we have no midweek commitments prior to the clash with Ajax and no fixtures have been scheduled the weekend after we have taken on Ajax, either”, said Koeman who also announced that Tardelli had become the latest addition to PSV’s seemingly endless injury list. “When you face PSV, you know you should not give away acres of space” said Lokhoff, who was pleased that so many elements from his game plan were effective. ”We have attempted to concede as little as possible and our defence stood solid for the full 90 minutes. There will always be one or two opportunities to score, but we could not break the deadlock either. This is great morale-boosting result for us and we will be more confident when we try to make sure of staying up in the Eredivisie the next few games.”
