PSV head coach Ronald Koeman honestly admitted at the post-match press conference that PSV stand no chance of progress into the last four. He was also upset about the hamstring injury that Jefferson Farfán had sustained. The forward will undergo an MRI scan on Wednesday.
“I really do not see a way back for PSV. We would have to be from another planet to think we could salvage the tie”, said Koeman, also referring to PSV’s seemingly endless succession of injuries. He was first of all disappointed about the painful result, but also concerned about the injury that Farfán had sustained. “It's not realistic to think we can turn it around next Wednesday in the return match at Anfield of all places. Of course the injury to Farfán is also painful. We are hit by injuries. Before we went one goal down, we played well. We conceded little and were well organised, until Finnan was given too much space. We could not close him down and Steven Gerrard scored a fantastic goal with a great header. The game was over soon after the break, when Simons embarrassingly cleared the ball straight to Riise who blasted it into the roof of the net. Liverpool are a few sizes too big for us. We did not threaten and were unable to create danger up front. I don’t think this defeat will have an impact on our performances in the domestic league. Winning coach Rafael Benítez was obviously delighted with the result, but he also had injury concerns. Defender Fabio Aurelio left the pitch on a stretcher after he had suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon. “We knew PSV had some problems. When we were 1-0 up, we had to wait patiently before we could profit from their mistakes and that is just what we did. 3-0 is a great result and we're all delighted.
