Romário has not been able to end his 298 minute-goal drought. The small Brazilian striker could not find the net in Vasco da Gama’s 4-4 draw with fellow townsmen Botafogo from Rio. It is not yet known when O Baixinho (The Small One) will be given another opportunity to reach the landmark one thousand goals, as Vasco da Gama are no longer in the race for the state championship.
Vasco da Gama and Botafogo fought out a spectacular derby. The half-time score was 4-3. Before the break Romario came close to scoring his 1000th career goal, but he just failed to connect with an inch-perfect cross for a 2-2 headed equaliser. “I just wish my son would have been a few inches taller”, complained Romário’s father Edevair after the game. Vasco will start the Campeonato Brasileiro campaign on 13 May, when they take on América (RN), but Romario has already intimated he does not feel like taking part in the national league. The Brazilian media representatives think an extra friendly game may be staged, so Romário will have reason to throw a party after all.
