32-year-old <L CODE="C01">André Ooijer</L> is stepping up his rehabilitation programme, three months after he broke an ankle in the Premiership match against Manchester City. The former PSV defender expects it will take another two months before he will return to full fitness and hopes to be fit at the start of the pre-season campaign.
Ooijer underwent surgery one day after he broke his ankle and soon started to rehabilitate. “At first I needed a week’s rest, but then I gradually got going again. I first of all wanted to maintain fitness. Three weeks ago I resumed running and I have been back on the training pitch once. I think I have been overdoing things a bit too much and suffered a setback. I will now focus on the next season. The pre-season campaign starts on 2 July.” Last week Ooijer paid a visit to his former team mates at the players’ hotel in Liverpool, while they were preparing for the UCL clash with The Reds and saw the game at Anfield. “I still keep in close touch with PSV. I think they are having a great season. They have reached UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and of course they are still in contention for the Dutch title. They have had a dismal run, but fortunately they returned to winning ways against FC Twente and with a two-point lead, things can go their way.” Ooijer is still enjoying his stay in Blackburn. Last Sunday his team, thirteenth in the Premiership table, were knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea. “I felt shattered, first of all because I could not make appearance in such a big game and most of all as we should not have slipped to defeat.”
