Romário de Souza Faria’s dream has finally come true. The 41-year-old former PSV striker converted a spot kick last night, successfully completing a long quest to reach the 1000-goal mark. “I dedicate this to my family, my children”, said Romário.
Romário scored his 1,000th career goal in the 48th minute in Vasco da Gama‘s 3-1 win over Sport Recife in the Brazilian Championship. The small Brazilian realised his great goalscoring achievement from a penalty, exactly as he had hoped for, as all eyes would be on him. Romário was immediately mobbed by team mates, before innumerable members of the media, television crews and radio reporters rushed on to the pitch to get as close to him as possible. .It took sixteen minutes before the game could be restarted. “I dedicate this to my family, my children. I'm so emotional. This is an extraordinary moment in my life”, said the man who made Brazil world champions in 1994 and who spent five seasons (1988-1993) with PSV in Eindhoven. “It's a great pleasure to reach this landmark, which only one player has managed,” he said, referring to his compatriot Pelé, the only other player to have secured this record. Romário scored 165 goals in 167 appearances for PSV, clinching the Dutch title three times and winning the Dutch Cup twice. He netted his other goals during his spells at Vasco da Gama, the Brazilian national team, FC Barcelona, Flamengo, Valencia CF, Fluminense, Miami FC, Adelaide United and in several youth, friendly and testimonial matches. PSV.nl has been keeping track of Romário’s quest for over eighteen months, ever since he had taken his career tally to about 950 goals. Romário will now go down in football history as one of the greatest goal scorers ever.
