The Netherlands enjoyed a 1-0 win over Israel in their UEFA European Under-21 Championship opening game on Sunday night. Hedwiges Maduro scored the winning goal after ten minutes. The victory was marred by an injury that PSV midfielder Ismail Aissati sustained on the stroke of half time.
Defending champions
The defending champions entirely dominated the game at the Abe Lenstra Stadium, but found it hard to convert their possession into goals. Ten minutes were on the clock when Royston Drenthe curled a free-kick to the far post and Hedwiges Maduro was in the right place to tap home from close range. The hosts wanted to kill of the game in the early stages and Israel survived an early scare, when Ryan Babel shot narrowly wide, while the agile Maceo Rigters, who was given a place in the starting line-up at the expense of PSV forward Roy Beerens, also threatened a few times. The Netherlands, however, failed to extend their advantage.
Ismail Aissati
PSV midfielder Ismail Assati limped off the pitch on the stroke of half time, after he had sustained a knee injury and his PSV team mate Otman Bakkal was brought on to replace him. Roy Beerens did not leave the bench. Belgium and Portugal, who had included PSV defender Manuel da Costa in their starting eleven, shared the points from their Group A opening game, after they drew 0-0 in Groningen. The Netherlands will meet Portugal on Wednesday, while Israel plays Belgium.
