Peru started their Copa América 2007 in Venezuela brightly as <L CODE="C01">Jefferson Farfán’s</L> team emphatically beat Uruguay 3-0 in front of a crowd of 23,000 at the Metropolitano de Mérida stadium. The PSV striker, who was taken off ten minutes from time, did not get his name on the score sheet, but certainly deserved a nomination for the ‘Man of the Match’ award.
Miguel Villalta headed Peru into the lead, when the defender powered home a header from Farfán’s cross after 27 minutes. With twenty minutes to go, Juan Carlos Mariño doubled Peru’s advantage with a long-range strike, while Paolo Guerre tapped in the third, two minutes from time.`In Tuesday's second Group A match, host Venezuela, who will meet Peru with Farfán in three days, drew 2-2 with Bolivia. Ecuador, with <L CODE="C02">Edison Mendez</L>, will take on Chili in Puerto Ordaz today and <L CODE="C04">Alex</L> may also make his first appearance when Brazil meet Mexico. PSV defender <L CODE="C03">Carlos Salcido</L> has pulled out of the Copa América. Lee Nguyen (USA) is the fourth player to represent PSV at the Copa América.
