<L CODE="C01">Oscar Moens</L> has decided to retire from football. The 34-year goalkeeper has asked PSV to release him from the remaining year of his contract and the Eindhoven club has agreed to dissolve his existing contract. PSV have meanwhile signed Bas Roorda, who will replace Moens as understudy for Heurelho Gomes at the Philips Stadium.
“We really regret his decision to quit the game; he was a perfect standby goalkeeper. But he told us he found it hard to cope with, so we decided to dissolve his contract”, explained PSV’s Football Director Stan Valckx. Oscar Moens looks back fondly at his great season with PSV. “PSV are a great club and I have met only friendly people here. But I have reached a point where I want to try something different and I am keen for a new challenge”, said Moens, who did not comment on what he intended to do exactly. His long career was marked by many highs. Moens: “My appearances for the national team of course, the Cup final with Willem II against PSV and my last season as a professional football player at PSV. We clinched the title and I thoroughly enjoyed the UEFA Champions League campaign.”
Oscar Moens started his career at MSV ’71, before he made a move to SVV, where he was deputy goalkeeper for Joop Hiele, the current PSV goalkeeping coach. He joined Excelsior from SVV in 1992 and had spells at Go Ahead Eagles, AZ, RBC Roosendaal, Genoa in Italy, before going on to play for Willem II in 2004. After two seasons in Tilburg, he joined PSV from Willem II as standby for first-choice stopper Gomes. He was included in PSV’s starting line-up for the Johan Cruijff Shield clash and started in two league matches and one Dutch Cup match last season. Oscar Moens made two appearances for the national team. He was handed his debut at The Oranje on 13 October 1998 in Holland’s 0-0 draw against Ghana in a friendly at the Gelredome in Arnhem. He made his second appearance when Holland drew 1-1 with Denmark in a friendly on 10 November 2001.
