The new Superleague Formula racing competition has taken a great step forward in becoming a major intercontinental competition, after having completed a deal with Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro, one of the most successful clubs in Brazil. Flamengo is the first non-European club to put pen to paper, after a number of European top clubs, including PSV, had already pledged their commitment to participate in Superleague Formula.

Flamengo joins PSV, AC Milan, FC Polnrto, Olympiakos, Borussia Dortmund and Anderlecht as seventh participant in the Superleague Formula. The Brazilian club is one of four clubs never to be relegated from the Brazilian top flight, while its championship successes include 29 Rio State Championships and five Brazilian national titles.
The first Superleague Formula race will be held in August 2008, with the calendar stretching to November 2008. In all in, six races will be held at top circuits in the first year. On Saturday three will be free testing and qualifying, while there will be two races on Sunday, one of them with reverse grids.
Superleague Formula will see one car represent each football club, with all the teams using identical cars and technologies: a 750bph engine comes in a V12 configuration.
