PSV head coach Ronald Koeman admitted his side had put in a poor display against VVV-Venlo on Saturday night and thought his players had better forget this match and focus on UEFA Champions Tuesday's clash with Fenerbahçe at the Philips Stadium. Koeman singled out Dirk Marcellis, who made his first start of the season tonight, for special praise.

'Teams will always adapt their game, when they are visitors at the Philips Stadium. VVV-Venlo had every right to play a compact defence', said Ronald Koeman at the post-match press conference. 'They conceded little space. We did not create many chances, but three goals were enough to give us a win after a fairly poor display. Fortunately we will play another match on Tuesday, so we'd better forget this one and focus on Tuesday's clash with Fenerbahçe.'
Ronald Koeman singled out Dirk Marcellis for special praise. 'He is making tremendous progress and I rewarded him with a starting place. He has been called up for Holland Under-21 and the Olympic team. He plays with great composure and delivers a great pass. He started the move that led to the opening goal. I am happy with his performance. Dirk produced a few highlights tonight.'

'We had selection worries before the game. First-choice keeper Kevin Begois was ill and that's why Wintjens started', explained VVV-Venlo coach André Wetzel 'We opted to play three defenders to mark the two PSV strikers. They scored a fine opening goal from a great long ball delivered by Marcellis. We did not change our tactical plans after the interval and tried to play counter attacks. After PSV had doubled their advantage with a superb strike, we reduced the deficit and then attempted to score an equalizer, in an away game against the defending champions. PSV, however, scored another fine goal and we had to accept defeat. I am disappointed we are left empty-handed again, but I also take the positives out of this game. We provided tough opposition and had our moments. I am happy we have taken some positive steps forward', concluded Wetzel.
