PSV have met opponents from Turkey in European competitions six times before, five times in Eindhoven and one time in Arnhem, and the Eindhoven club have won all six previous home games. PSV have been drawn against Fenerbahçe SK for the third time.
PSV first met Fenerbahçe SK in the European Champion Clubs' Cup in the 1978/79 season. The Eindhoven outfit slipped to a 2-1 defeat in Istanbul, but at home they made amends, pulling off an emphatic 6-1 win. Ten seasons later PSV were paired with another Turkish club. In the successful 1987/88 campaign PSV enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory against Galatasaray, but on their travels to Turkey they had a narrow escape, following a 2-0 defeat. And no PSV fan will ever forget the remainder of that season.

In the European Cup I 1991/92 campaign PSV travelled to Istanbul, this time to face Besiktas. They reached the next round following a 1-1 draw in the away game and a 2-1 win at home. Exactly ten years later Galatasaray were one of the opponents in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The home tie was played in Arnhem, as punishment for the crowd trouble that marred PSV's UEFA Cup quarter final clash with Kaiserslautern in the 2000/01 season. PSV earned a 3-1 win in Arnhem, but were beaten 2-0 in Istanbul.

PSV last met Fenerbahçe two seasons ago. They suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat on their travels, but booked a place in the next round for the second successive time after seeing off the Turkish opponents 2-0 in Eindhoven, with Cocu and Farfán on target.
Last season PSV again jetted to Istanbul, and again Galatasaray provided the opposition. Kromkamp and Koné scored a goal, making sure of a 2-1 away win and at home Simons and again Koné featured in PSV's 2-0 victory.
