PSV have retained their top position in the Eredivisie after Ajax crashed to a 2-1 shock defeat against Excelsior in Rotterdam on Sunday afternoon. PSV, who earned an emphatic 4-1 victory against FC Utrecht on Saturday night, now hold a one-point cushion over Feyenoord, who moved up to second following a 2-0 win at N.E.C. Ajax are third, two points behinds behind reigning champions PSV.

Former PSV player Ton Lokhoff led his team, who were bottom of the table ahead of Sunday's game, to a stunning 2-1 win over Ajax, who failed to move top. The hosts had a flying start when Mitchell Piqué opened the scoring in the very first minute, and Geert den Ouden doubled their advantage on the close of half time. Ajax enjoyed more possession after the break and Maduro reduced the deficit. Ajax-PSV has been rescheduled for Wednesday January 30, kick-off 8.45pm.
PSV will be in action two more times this year. They first travel to the north of Holland to face FC Groningen on Boxing Day, before they play host to NAC Breda at the Philips Stadium on Sunday 30 December. Ajax entertain FC Twente on Thursday, while Feyenoord take on Sparta at the Kuip in the Rotterdam derby on Wednesday. VVV-Venlo are in the winning mood: the newly promoted Eredivisie team earned a deserved 2-0 win at home over Vitesse.
