Abu Dhabi is one of the most modern cities in the world. It is situated on an island in the Persian Gulf and is the capital of both the emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arabic Emirates. When oil was found in the sixties, Abu Dhabi was transformed from a small fishing village into one of the richest cities in the world. Thanks to a sophisticated system of irrigation with desalted sea water, the town is now an oasis, with wonderful gardens and fountains, in the empty desert. There are big luxury buildings everywhere. The tourists and businessmen have found their way to the hotels in Abu Dhabi and in Dubai as well. The streets are very clean indeed; you will not even find a tiny little bit of paper in the streets. There are only big luxury cars on the roads; you will not find any medium-sized cars that are popular in Holland. The roads are spacious and traffic jams are an uncommon phenomenon in Abu Dhabi. The oil export is still the most important economic pillar, but the oil wealth in Abu Dhabi is also used to promote other kinds of industry, agriculture and cattle breeding. The emirates possess 10% of the world’s oil reserves. Filling up is not expensive in this part of the world. A gallon of petrol (3, 8 liters) is 5 Dirham, the equivalent of about one euro. So one liter of petrol is about 27 euro cents, whereas the current price of one liter of unleaded petrol in Holland is 1 euro 199.
