The end-of-the-season play-offs will undergo large changes as from next season. The teams between first and fourth place will no longer compete in the play-offs. The champions and runners-up will qualify for the (preliminary round of the) Champions League, while the third and fourth-placed teams will automatically book a place in the UEFA Cup tournament.
The KNVB, the Dutch football association, who introduced the play-off two seasons ago, complies with the wishes of the Eredivisie clubs. The football association itself considered the end-of-the-season play-offs a success. 'As all clubs had everything to play for until the last round of matches, gates were rising and the clubs could generate more money'. The new format will be re-evaluated after the 2008/09 season. PSV is the only club who has always been against the introduction of the end-of-the-season play-offs. The clubs between fifth and eighth place will vie for the remaining UEFA Cup place in the best-of-three system. No changes will be made to the promotion/relegation play offs and the KNVB Cup tournament.
