There was a mixed bag of results for those PSV players away on international duty with their respective countries. Ibrahim Afellay was brought on as a substitute as the Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw by Guus Hiddink's Russia in Moscow on Wednesday night.
Van Bommel comeback
Bert van Marwijk led the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw in his first official game as head coach in charge of the Dutch team. Mark van Bommel, who was no longer available for the national team after a fall-out with previous coach Marco van Basten, made a comeback and the 31-year-old midfielder put in a trademark performance. The former PSV players André Ooijer and Arjen Robben kept their places in the starting line-up against Guus Hiddink's Russia. The Oranje, who did not succeed in making amends for the 3-1 extra-time loss against Russia during the Euro 2008, dominated the first half and the second half for large periods in Bert van Marwijk's debut as head coach. Robin van Persie deservedly put the Dutch ahead on 24 minutes, when he superbly curled the ball past keeper Akinfeev. Russia drew level 12 minutes from time when FC Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Konstantin Zirianov struck home a penalty-kick, following a foul from captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Ibrahim Afellay had been brought on as substitutes in the 59th and 72nd minute, respectively. 'VOH' might have won it for Holland in added time but was denied by keeper Igor Akinfejev.
Culina, Dzsudzsák, Väyrynen and Simons
Jason Culina played the full 90 minutes in Australia's 2-2 draw with South Africa at Loftus Road in London on Tuesday. Hungary coach Erwin Koeman saw his team claim a 3-3 draw with Montenegro. Balázs Dzsudzsák played the entire match. Finland beat Israel 2-0 in New York. Mika Väyrynen was taken off after 73 minutes. Closer to home, Timmy Simons, captain of the Red Devils, got ninety minutes under his belt, but was unable to stop Germany, beaten Euro 2008 finalists, winning 2-0 in a friendly match at NĂĽrnberg.
Isaksson and the Mexicans
PSV keeper Andreas Isaksson was included in the Sweden starting line-up for the friendly international with France at the L'Ullevi Stadium in Göteborg, with a 30, 000 attendance. Isaksson conceded three goals as France enjoyed a 3-2 victory. Mexico, who had included Carlos Salcido in their starting line-up, came out 2-1 victors over Honduras in a World Cup 2010 qualifying game. Francisco 'Maza' Rodriguez watched from the sidelines. The PSV defender was an unused substitute.
