PSV lifted their first piece of silverware of the new season, following a 2-0 Super Cup win over Feyenoord at the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday night. Danko Lazovic and Dirk Marcellis scored goals after the break to wrap up a deserved and impressive 2-0 victory in the official opening game of the 2008/09 season.
Steady progress
PSV will display their seventh Johan Cruijff Shield in the trophy cabinet at the Philips Stadium, but head coach Huub Stevens will be most happy with the steady progress that his team is making. Dirk Marcellis, who did not feel travel-weary at all, capped a fine display with a goal. Amrabat, Méndez and Afellay in particular produced convincing displays, while Maza and Pieters made their debuts for PSV after they had been brought on as substitutes during the second half. And players the likes of Bakkal, Koevermans and Culina did not even leave the bench. At the pre-match post conference, Stevens had referred to tonight's game as 'the final match of the pre-season, with a trophy at stake' and he was right. PSV dominated the game against an injury-hit Feyenoord and former PSV goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen handed the prize to PSV captain Timmy Simons.
First half report
PSV head coach Huub Stevens included Dirk Marcellis, who had represented PSV at the Olympic Games, in the starting line-up and rewarded young Belgian Stijn Wuytens with a place in the starting eleven for a number of impressive pre-season performances. PSV played a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Amrabat, Afellay and Méndez supporting lone striker up front Lazovic. Marcellis played alongside Bréchet in the centre of defence. Following a tentative 15-minute opening period, Méndez and Simons had efforts on target. Amrabat kept defenders busy on the left flank, exchanging slick passes with Afellay. PSV were the most attack-minded side, while Feyenoord were happy to wait for counter attacks. Feyenoord had their first chance on the half-hour mark, but no forward was on hand to connect with Biseswar's teasing cross. PSV dominated the first half and Amrabat had a slender chance to open the scoring while Zonneveld curled a free kick across the face of goal.
Second-half goals from Lazovic and Marcellis
PSV continued to press forward after the break. Afellay had already hit the post when Lazovic broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half. Amrabat created an opening; Zonneveld's centre took a deflection and Lazovic, left completely unmarked, comfortably headed home; 0-1. Ten minutes later, PSV doubled their lead, when Marcellis blasted a powerful header home from Zonneveld's free kick; 0-2. It could have been a better scoreline, but Méndez failed to take a chance. Schet came on and the Feyenoord substitute brought out a fine save from keeper Isaksson. Fifteen minutes from time, Maza replaced Salcido and Pieters left the bench to take over from Zonneveld. Dzsudzsák was brought on during the closing stages. The Hungarian winger delivered a perfect cross for Amrabat, who hit the ball over the bar, with the goal at his mercy. PSV earned a morale-boosting victory, one week ahead of the season's opening fixture, away against FC Utrecht.
