Iceland have never qualified for a European Championship or World Cup yet and they are not likely to qualify for the World Cup 2010, after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Holland at the Rotterdam Kuip on Saturday. Former PSV striker Eidur Gudjohnsen's team are bottom of group 9, having claimed one point from their three opening games. Mathijsen and Huntelaar scored a goal each for the Oranje either side of the break.
Marcellis debut
He was seven years old when Edwin van der Sar made his debut for the Dutch team and he played in a PSV junior team when Mark van Bommel made his first appearance for the Oranje. Dirk Marcellis, born in Horst in the county of Limburg on 13 April 1988, made his debut for Holland against Iceland in the Rotterdam Kuip on Saturday night. In a major step forward in his career that may very well be labeled as 'lightning', the 20-year-old put in a confident display as right back. He frequently overlapped Dirk Kuyt on the right wing, and joined in with the attack in the second half in particular. And he was solid as a rock in the closing stages, when Iceland threw men forward in a bid to score a consolation.
Afellay brought on as a substitute
and dominated possession, trying to break down Iceland's defence. The Oranje took the lead after fifteen minutes through Joris Mathijsen. The centre back had joined the attack at a corner. The ball fell to Mathijsen, who slid the ball past the Iceland keeper from close range to open the scoring. Minutes before, Nigel de Jong had been forced to leave the field after he had picked up a knee injury and Demy de Zeeuw replaced him. The home side doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, when Klaas Jan Huntelaar unleashed a left-footed shot past the keeper and into the far corner of the net. Van Marwijk brought on Ibrahim Afellay in the 68th minute. The creative midfielder was involved in some flowing moves as Holland enjoyed a two-goal cushion. With eight minutes to go, Holland made their third substitution, when Wesley Sneijder came on to replace Van der Vaart, so PSV defender Jan Kromkamp knew he would not leave the bench on Saturday night. No more goals were scored in the closing stages, as Holland made it two wins in as many matches. They are on top of Group Nine, when they travel to Oslo on Wednesday to face Norway.
