At the post-press conference at the Stade Vélodrome, PSV coach Huub Stevens bemoaned his team's failure to capitalise on scoring chances. 'We had chances, but failed to convert them. Over the two games against them Olympique, we scored two goals from ten scoring opportunities, which is not enough', he said.
'Created chances, but did not convert them'
Stevens was first to analyse his team's 3-0 defeat in Marseille on Tuesday night. 'We put in a solid first-half display. We were well organised and conceded hardly anything at the back. After the break Olympique caught us a few times on the counter attack', said Stevens. 'When you play a team like Olympique Marseille, you know they will create chances. But worse is that we created chances ourselves, which we failed to convert. I think we scored two goals from ten scoring opportunities over the two games against them Olympique, which is not enough. We didn't reward ourselves. We can now only focus on claiming the third place.' Stevens explained that he had taken off Bakkal as he was troubled by a sore hamstring. He added that Afellay was substituted after he had picked up a knock.
Erik Gerets' review
Erik Gerets was obviously happy that his side had recorded their first win in Champions League group stages. 'We struggled in the first half and if Koevermans had scored the opening goal, it might have been a different game', said Gerets, who served PSV both a player (1985-92) and a coach (1999-2002).' He stressed the importance of overcoming the 2-0 deficit from the first match. 'We not only clinched victory tonight but also climbed off the bottom of our group. We have a chance of qualifying for the UEFA Cup. PSV and Olympique are level on points, but we have the better results in the two head-to-head encounters.'
