N.E.C. inflicted a 1-0 home defeat on PSV at the McDos Goffert Stadium in Nijmegen on Saturday night, courtesy of an early goal by captain Wisgerhof. PSV slipped to their fourth defeat of the season, just as many as they suffered in their successful 2007/08 campaign. Stevens' team enjoyed most possession, but lacked a cutting edge up front, as they face a hectic schedule this week.
Early opener
Dzsudzsák and Pieters returned to the starting line-up as PSV faced N.E.C., who gave a starting place to former PSV striker Tim Janssen in attack. Referee Luinge took charge of his 500th Eredivisie game and the captains Simons and Wisgerhof presented the referee a bunch of flowers. After a tentative opening, the hosts took control of the match, chasing the ball all over the field. N.E.C. were rewarded for their dominance with a goal after twelve minutes. A corner was headed towards goal and PSV looked unsteady at the back. When the ball was half cleared, Wisgerhof had the simple task of tapping home the opener at the far post. Méndez and Dzsudzsák had chances for PSV, but the Eindhoven outfit lacked passion and conviction, as they put up a sloppy display. Schöne and Bouaouzan had opportunities for the home side to double the margin and El-Akchaoui threatened from a free kick.
Second-half report
The match continued in much the same vein with chances few and far between. Stevens made a double substitution after 57 minutes, taking off Marcellis and Koevermans for Kromkamp and Lazovic respectively, while Nijland replaced Wuytens five minutes later. N.E.C. looked dangerous on the counter-attack. PSV enjoyed the bulk of possession, but created no chances and lacked goalscoring prowess. Five minutes from the end, Lazovic was in a shooting position, but blasted his shot wildly over the bar. N.E.C. comfortably held on and substitute Tshibamba came close to scoring a second goal for the hosts. PSV leave Nijmegen empty-handed, and face a tall task in Wednesday's Cup tie with AZ in Alkmaar, before they travel to Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday to meet Ajax.
