The Champions League game Atlético Madrid- PSV will be played behind closed doors. UEFA sanctioned the Spanish club by ordering that one match shall be played in an empty stadium. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld that sanction, which will apply to the Atlético Madrid - PSV match on 26 November 2008. Atlético were punished following incidents which occurred during the Champions League match between Atlético Madrid and Olympique Marseille, held on 1 October 2008 at the Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid.
No spectators present
A hearing was held on Wednesday, 19 November 2008 at the CAS headquarters in Lausanne and a CAS panel took the following decisions on Thursday, 20 November at noon: Atlético Madrid â€' PSV will be played at Vicente Calderon Stadium with no spectators present. CAS has lifted the threat of a second match being played behind closed doors and the fine was reduced by half. Atlético Madrid shall now pay a fine of € 75,000. The decision will cause problems for PSV fans, who have already booked a trip to Madrid.
CAS will publish their reasons for the decision at a later date
Atlético were originally ordered by UEFA to play three Champions League home matches at least 300 kilometers away from Madrid, with one of those matches deferred. UEFA punished Atlético after crowd trouble and allegations of racist abuse at an October 1 match against French club Olympique Marseille. Atlético challenged the verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport .CAS has upheld UEFA's ruling that Atlético Madrid should play a Champions League game behind closed doors at Vicente Calderon Stadium on Wednesday 26 November with an 8.45pm kick off.
