Today this page will take you through the month of October when PSV had mixed fortunes at home and in their Champions League campaign. Dirk Marcellis made his Oranje debut. PSV enjoyed Superleague Formula successes and they joined a Euro community project.
Mixed fortunes in Champions League
On 1 October, PSV suffered a 3-1 defeat at Anfield against mighty Liverpool. With the game effectively over, Danny Koevermans scored a fine consolation goal. Two weeks later PSV got their first points of the campaign against Erik Gerets' Olympique Marseille. PSV produced their best performance of the season, as they recorded a 2-0 home win, courtesy of two Danny Koevermans second-half headers. His second goal was PSV's 250th goal in a European match. There were mixed results for PSV in the domestic league as well. They recorded wins over De Graafschap at home (3-0) and away at ADO Den Haag (0-2), but Huub Stevens' team suffered defeat away against NAC Breda (2-1) and away at Roda JC (2-3).
Dirk Marcellis made Oranje debut
Dirk Marcellis was named in the Holland squad for the first time and the 20-year-old defender made his Oranje debut on 11 October in Holland's 2-0 home victory over Iceland in their World Cup Group Nine qualifier. He was the seventeenth PSV player who had come through the academy ranks to be handed his debut in the national team. Four days later, Netherlands Bert van Marwijk coach included Marcellis in the starting line up, as a Mark van Bommel goal was enough to claim a 1-0 victory away at Norway.
First Superleague Formula success
Yelmer Buurman claimed a podium place in race two of round three of the Superleague Formula championship Sunday, October 5, at Circuit Zolder in Belgium, situated not far from Eindhoven. Dirk Marcellis, Timmy Simons, Bas Roorda and Stijn Wuytens saw the PSV driver get through to third place. Buurman also finished third in the Vallelunga race in Italy two weeks later, retaining his second place in the standings.
Miscellaneous
Uefa issued a three-match stadium ban against PSV CL's opponents Atlético Madrid following crowd trouble and racist comments at Atlético's game against Marseille on October 1. The punishment was partially upheld and the Spanish team would have to play the Champions League match in November against PSV behind closed doors.

A review of the month of November 2008 will be published on Sunday, January 11.
