On the first few days of the new year, PSV.nl will present a review of 2008. It has been a memorable year in the history of PSV. Today this page will take you through the month of December, looking back at the games, the goals, the incidents, the drama and the memories. PSV staged a stunning comeback to earn a 4-2 victory over FC Groningen, but also suffered defeat against Liverpool, which saw the end of their European campaign. PSV.nl was named Website of the year and PSV players made their annual visit to five children's hospitals.
PSV head into winter break in fourth place
On 6 December, PSV staged a stunning comeback to earn a 4-2 win over FC Groningen at the Philips Stadium. The Dutch champions came from two goals down at half time to claim an incredible victory. Otman Bakkal and Nordin Amrabat, who were brought on as substitutes at half time, were involved in all four second-half goals. One week later, PSV dropped points for the sixth time in an away game this season, as Huub Stevens' team had to settle for a 1-1 draw against. Amrabat gave PSV a first-half lead, but Tarvajärvi scored an equaliser after the break. On Sunday, December 21, PSV played host to Feyenoord. Huub Stevens' team dominated proceedings. Ibrahim Afellay was the hero for PSV as he scored the all-important 78th minute goal to secure a 1-0 win. PSV moved into fourth place, following this victory, and they were still lying fourth after they were held to a 0-0 draw by FC Twente on the last match day before the winter break.
The end of the European campaign
PSV's slim chances of qualifying for the UEFA Cup competition were shattered as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at the Philips Stadium on 9 December, which saw the end of their European campaign. For 45 minutes they looked to be heading for a good result, but goals from Babel, Riera and Ngog sent Liverpool through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League as Group D winners. PSV will not compete in any European competition after the winter break for the first time since 2002.
Website of the year
On 15 December, PSV.nl was named Website of the Year 2008. The official club site was named best sports site as well as most popular sports site.
PSV players visit hospitals
PSV players made their annual visit to five children's wards at hospitals in the community on Monday, December 22. They spent time with children and families and handed out Christmas gifts. 'It was an enjoyable visit. It's important for us to be here and I hope we've made someone's day', said captain Timmy Simons. The players split into small groups and visited children and their families at the St Anna Hospital in Geldrop, the Máxima Medical Centre in Veldhoven, the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, The Elkerliek in Helmond and the University Medical Centre in Nijmegen. The players handed out gifts and signed autographs for the youngsters.
Miscellaneous
PSV maintained the tradition of inviting former stars to a league game at the end of December. A large number of former players, among whom Ruud van Nistelrooy, Mark van Bommel, Wilfred Bouma, Arnold Bruggink and Theo Lucius, had accepted the invitation to attend the game against FC Twente and had made the trip to Eindhoven to see PSV in action. And popular singer Guus Meeuwis announced his intention to also perform gigs at the Philips Stadium in 2009.
