PSV dropped two valuable points in a 1-1 draw against a poor N.E.C side in their final home match of the season at the Philips Stadium. After PSV had been reduced to nine men, following the dismissals of Lazovic and Méndez, Tim Janssen scored an injury-time equaliser to give his side one point. Lazovic had put PSV ahead twelve minutes into the second half.
Culina, Lodeweges, Wouters bade farewell to the Philips Stadium
PSV did not succeed in extending their winning streak to six matches, but only have themselves to blame for dropping valuable points. Dwight Lodeweges' team were one goal up when they were reduced to nine men, following the dismissal of Danko Lazovic for two bookable offences while Edison Méndez was given his marching orders after he had been shown a straight red card. PSV could have cut the gap with third-placed Ajax, who were emphatically beaten 4-0 by Sparta, to only one point, but conceded an equaliser deep into injury time. Jason Culina, coach Dwight Lodeweges and assistant coach Jan Wouters bade farewell to the Philips Stadium. They completed their lap of honour with flowers held aloft.
PSV dominated first-half proceedings
PSV coach Dwight Lodeweges made three changes to the team that had recorded five consecutive wins. Afellay was ruled out with injury and Culina moved up to midfield to replace him. Kromkamp was handed a start and Bréchet, who had shaken off an injury, also returned to the starting line-up, at the expense of Maza. Lazovic replaced the suspended Dzsudzsák. PSV put N.E.C. under pressure from the first whistle and only one minute was on the clock when the visitors survived a huge scare after both Lazovic and Culina came close to snatching the first goal. Only one team wanted to play attacking football as Méndez tested N.E.C. goalkeeper Gabor Babos with a fierce shot. Simons had a header on target and Lazovic had several good shots on goal as PSV went in search of a goal. N.E.C. had precious little to offer and were content to break up PSV's attacks and try to catch them on the break. The visitors from Nijmegen got one great chance to draw level, though. Former PSV striker Tim Janssen had been put clean through but blasted wildly over the bar. At the other end, Méndez had an opportunity to put PSV ahead but his shot lacked accuracy and sailed wide of the post.
Lazovic and Méndez sent off
Toivonen was substituted at half time in favour of Koevermans, as PSV also started the second half brightly. Culina seemed to have opened the scoring for PSV two minutes after the restart, but had his goal controversially ruled out for offside. The breakthrough came ten minutes later. Lazovic was fouled in the box by Koenders and coolly converted from the penalty spot himself; 1-0. He then picked up a card for taking his shirt off, meaning he would miss next week's match. Minutes later Koevermans had a decent penalty appeal turned down when he was held in the penalty area. Lazovic's sending off was the turning point of the game. The Serb striker went from hero to villain when he was shown a second yellow card for handling the ball. Reduced to ten men, PSV remained the better side and N.E.C. lacked the strength to put themselves back into the game. Things got worse for PSV when Méndez was also given his marching orders. He received a straight red card, with ten minutes remaining. Pieters was brought on for Amrabat as PSV tried to take all three points. Yet Janssen scored a late equaliser, to the dismay of the PSV fans, who saw their team drop valuable points. PSV will be next in action on Sunday when they travel to Tilburg to face Willem II on the last match day of the 2008/09 season.
