Belgium, with PSV captain Timmy Simons, crashed to an emphatic 4-0 friendly defeat against hosts Japan in the Kirin Cup on Sunday. Simons played the full 90 minutes just like he did in Belgium's 1-1 draw with Chili in the opening game of the tournament. Japan won the Kirin Cup.
Advocaat new Belgium coach
'It's been a very instructive tournament', admitted Belgium coach Vercauteren. 'We had an under-strength side after the players of Anderlecht and Standard Liege declined the invitation to take part in the international tournament. We now had an opportunity to see some other players in action and find out which of them could reach the international level.' A crowd of 42000 saw Japan coast to a comfortable 4-0 victory in the final game of the Kirin Cup tournament at Tokyo's National Stadium. Former PSV head coach Dick Advocaat, nicknamed the 'Little General', looks set to take over as coach of the Belgian national team, with only the final details of his contract to be finalised.
