Dutch clubs recorded mixed result on Thursday night in the UEFA Cup tournament. AZ simply held on, away against Alemannia Aachen, and settled for a goalless draw against the German side in which former PSV striker Erik Meijer played a prominent role. But sc Heerenveen suffered a 1-2 defeat against Newcastle United in spite of a great opening goal by Klaas Jan Huntelaar, another former PSV striker.Alemannia Aachen dominated the game and started most moves, but they could never threaten up front. Erik Meijer inspired his team mated to pour forward and try to score a crucial goal, but AZ earned the better chances. The team of coach Co Adriaanse has a great opportunity to progress to the quarter finals, if only they succeed in enjoying a win over the German side in Alkmaar next week.sc Heerenveen had a bright start in the UEFA Cup encounter at home against Newcastle United. Arnold Bruggink dispossessed Bramble and laid the ball back to Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who fired a blasting shot from just inside the box that crashed in off the underside of the bar. Newcastle United, however, are an experienced side. PSV know all about it, as they crashed out of the UEFA Cup last year, following a 1-1-draw at home and a 2-1 defeat in Newcastle. The English team came from behind to collect a win after all, thanks to goals by Alan Shearer goal and Lee Bowyer, who superbly diverted a cross with the back of his heel.PSV boss Guus Hiddink was a close observer in the Abe Lenstra Stadium, as PSV will travel to sc Heerenveen on 27 February next. Ajax beat Auxerre 1-0 at home on Wednesday night and Feyenoord slipped to a 2-1 defeat, away against Sporting Portugal.
