PSV have suffered their second domestic league defeat. Feyenoord claimed a narrow 1-0 win in the Feyenoord Kuip on Sunday afternoon. Although PSV gave their all and started a long-ball bombardment of the opponent’s penalty area, they were not able to salvage one point. SpectacularPSV could not finish a hectic week in which they met NAC Breda, Fenerbahçe SK and Feyenoord, in style. The visitors controlled proceedings in the first period and battered the compact wall of Feyenoord defenders, but failed to breech that wall. Dirk Kuyt scored a lucky goal in the initial stages and thus made sure of a hard wrought victory. Feyenoord spectacularly survived some late scares, but grabbed all three points. Jefferson FarfánThe first half was a pretty one-sided affair. PSV attempted to find an opening in the well organized Feyenoord defence and the hosts hoped to strike by starting some lethal counter attacks. At half time Feyenoord were 1-0 on top, thanks to a goal scored by Dirk Kuyt on six minutes. Salomon Kalou was in a shooting position; he completely miskicked the ball that somehow ricocheted to Kuyt. Gomes was wrong footed and Kuyt luckily tapped home the opening goal. PSV started many moves and hoped to cancel out the deficit before the break. Jefferson Farfán created most danger and he earned four chances in the first period. Bosschaart cleared the ball from the line, goalkeeper Lodewijks denied him twice and he had one shot blocked. The Rotterdam outfit passionately defended their lead, while PSV continued to search for an opening. André Ooijer was cautioned for a foul on Kalou, which means that the defender will have to serve a one-match ban next weekend, when PSV taken on Willem II. Four forwardsAt first the second half continued in the same vein until PSV to try and force a breakthrough. Hiddink brought on two new players twenty minutes from final time. Sibon came on for Culina and en Reiziger left to bench to replace Aissati. A few minutes before Robert had also been brought on as an extra forward, so that PSV played four forwards. The outcome was a completely open game. Feyenoord were given lots of space and PSV surged men forward in a desperate attempt to demolish the wall of defenders. Robert and Farfán earned chances, but they were thwarted by Feyenoord goalkeeper Lodewijks. At the other end Kuyt got an opportunity, but Gomes pulled off a great save. PSV moved even more men forward in the closing stages, including Gomes who strengthened the attacking options when two corner kicks were taken. Feyenoord were on the verge of breaking down, but they bravely held on. Sibon suddenly had a great opportunity to salvage one point after all, but he had his shot blocked. When Gomes had left his area, Kalou got a peach of an opportunity to wrap things up, but the Ivory Coast forward missed the goal by some niches. Feyenoord, PSV and AZ are now joint leaders of the Dutch Eredivisie. All three clubs have earned 35 points, but AZ are on top on goal difference.
