PSV have comfortably reached the national cup quarter finals, after they eased to a 3-0 win over FC Twente. The Eindhoven outfit succeeded in winning the Cup last season.PSV and FC Twente meet twice in the course of ten days. This was the first encounter and a league fixture is scheduled for 29 December. PSV attacked the full 90 minutes and FC Twente hoped to dispossess PSV and start some fast counter attacks. The game was never a genuine cup fight. Guus Hiddink guided his players to an emphatic win and the prospects of silverware are still bright. BeasleyBeasley, who staged a comeback in the Willem II game last Saturday night, was the most active and dangerous player on the pitch. It took the hosts twenty minutes to create the first danger. Cocu delivered the pass, Beasley outran Ouedraogo, but the American forward fired the ball across the goal. The visitors earned their first chance of the game, when Gerritsen cleverly rounded Ball, but in a one-on-one with Gomes, he had to acknowledge the superiority of the PSV goalie. FC Twente piled up the pressure in the closing stages of the first period and Gomes again did well to deny Zomer. When FC Twente surged forward, the PSV forwards were given space. They carved out the first opportunity in the final minute before the break. Vennegoor of Hesselink headed a cross on to Farfán who struck the ball from an acute angle past FC Twente keeper Boschker. AspirationsFC Twente did what they were expected to do after the restart. They needed a goal, so they moved men forward. On five minutes they got a golden opportunity to put things straight, but Gerritsen saw his shot bounce off the inside of the post unto the pitch. The PSV defence, who did well in spite of the absence of Alex, survived this early scary moment and eight minutes later the game was virtually killed off. Cocu, like a dynamo, produced a fine cross. Beasley touched the ball and Vennegoor of Hesselink was in the right place to beat Boschker. The visitors’ hopes to reach the next round were hugely dented. Koné and Väyrynen were brought on and PSV simply held on. Koné showed his technical skills in the last minute of stoppage time. Keeper Boschker was forced to stretch at full length to tip his effort away for a corner. From this corner the ball fell to Vennegoor of Hesselink, who notched his second goal of the night; 3-0. PSV are through to the next round.
