PSV-Olympique Lyon is one of three Champions League ties during which a referee communication system is tested. The referee and his two assistants will be able to communicate with the fourth official and vice versa by means an open microphone and an earphone. The fourth official can be in touch with the referee during the game. The test aims at a quick exchange of information for several situations, such as substitutions, additional time, the identity of a cautioned player and fouls which occur out of sight of the referee. The fourth official does not yet use TV coverage to see whether a ball has crossed the line. The system is already used at games in France and Scotland. The referee communication system will also be tested tonight at Bayern München-AC Milan and tomorrow night at Ajax- Internazionale Milan. The UEFA announce that the communication between referee and fourth official will not be used in any way for television broadcast. The UEFA Referees Committee hopes that the referee communication system will help the referee take better charge of a game. UEFA will carry on testing the referee communication system over the rest of the season. The system will be reviewed and depending on the results, UEFA will decide whether or not to extend its use for its leading competitions.
