Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink made his official World Cup debut against Portugal last night and Phillip Cocu took his tally to 101 games. The PSV captain had already announced before he would retire from international football after the World Cup 2006.Cocu and Vennegoor of HesselinkPhillip Cocu obviously hoped he would win 104 caps for his country, implying Holland would have reached the final of the tournament, but it was not to be.Cocu was handed his debut on 24 April 1996, when Holland also slipped to a 1-0 defeat, against Germany. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar made a record 133rd appearance for his country last night and broke the record that Frank de Boer (112 caps) had set. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was brought on ten minutes from final time and thus made an official World Cup debut. The PSV striker joined over 500 football players that have ever made an appearance for the Dutch team.
