PSV suffered a 3-0 defeat against 1.FC Nürnberg on Saturday afternoon in their final pre-season friendly. Nearly thirty thousand people had come to the easyCredit-Stadium to see the German Bundesliga club’s opening game of the new season. Ronald Koeman could not field Jefferson Farfán, who was ill, and André Ooijer, who has picked up a minor injury. It was an evenly contested affair, until a terrific downpour turned the game upside down. The German hosts, who finished sixth last season, felt at home and started many moves. The deadlock was broken on nineteen minutes, when Ivan Saenko found Robert Vittek, who was left completely unmarked: 1-0. Mika Väyrynen immediately earned a great opportunity, but the Fin put the ball wide of the goal. Nürnberg earned a free kick on the half-hour mark. Jan Kristiansen found Saenko, who headed home at the near post: 2-0. On the stroke of half time Phillip Cocu fired a long distance shot on target, but goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer was not impressed. Just like during the Alemannia Aachen friendly earlier this week, Jason Culina was brought on at half time. He replaced Manuel da Costa and Timmy Simons played in the heart of defence. PSV did not put in a sparkling performance; the pace of their game was low and they gave away too much space. Up front Arouna Koné had his moments and cut into the German box a few times, but the final pass invariably lacked accuracy. The hosts created the best chances after the break as well. Twenty minutes from final time substitute Ivica Banovic unleashed a powerful shot that went home: 3-0. Minutes before Eric Addo had been brought on for Väyrynen. Captain Cocu earned two opportunites in the closing stages. First goalkeeper Schäfer did well to deny him and then Cocu put the rebound just over the bar. Five minutes before the final whistle went, Gerald Sibon was handed his debut for his new club. Koné created the last chances of the game, but the Ivory Coast striker’s efforts were too feeble. PSV have now concluded their pre-season campaign. Head coach Ronald Koeman and PSV have one week left to prepare for the official opening game of the 2006-2007 season, when they meet Ajax for the Johan Cruijff Shield contest.
