Never before did a Dutch club succeed in securing a place in the final sixteen with two group stage games to spare. PSV and three more clubs qualified for the Champions League knockout stages last night.Liverpool FC enjoyed an emphatic 3-0 win over FC Girondins de Bordeaux at Anfield, thanks to a double from Luis García and a goal from Steven Gerrard. When the score was 1-0, Fernando Mengazzo was sent off. Referee Merk had no other option but to show the Brazilian midfielder a straight red card for headbutting John Arne Riise. Liverpool immediately made their man advantage count, when Gerrard and García scored two more goals. PSV and Liverpool, who meet on Wednesday 22 November in Liverpool, will vie for first place in group C, while Galatasaray and Bordeaux hope to finish third, making sure of qualification for the UEFA Cup tournament. Bayern München booked their place in the UEFA Champions League last 16, following a goalless draw with Sporting Clube de Portugal. Mark van Bommel, who is struggling with a hip problem, was ruled out of Tuesday night’s game. Valencia came from behind twice to earn one point, away at Shaktar Donetsk. Morientes and Ayala scored the goals because of which the Spanish club also qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.
