PSV defender Manuel da Costa is going to enjoy a well-deserved holiday, after Portugal U-21 slipped to defeat again Italy after a penalty shoot-out in Nijmegen last night. “I will now rest, have fun at the beach with some friends and do what it takes to empty my head before the new season”, he told www.uefa.com.
Undeserved The 21-year-old youth is lamenting the fact that Italy U-21 have claimed a berth at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, at the expense of Portugal. “We deserved to go to the Olympic Games, not Italy”, felt Da Costa. “Today, it's the team that deserved it the least that won. Sometimes it's like this, sometimes it's not. That's football. If we had played all the matches during the tournament like we did against Israel, we would definitely have qualified for the Olympic Games.”
Knee injury
Da Costa limped off the pitch last night, after he had sustained a minor knee injury. He told www.uefa.com.: “It was already hurting during the warm-up and I felt it through the whole game. The medical staff didn't want to take risks, but I would have gone on to help my team-mates.” After his holidays the defender will turn his attention to PSV again. “This season I want to be a champion and to go a long way in the UEFA Champions League.” He also wants to compete with Portugal in the UEFA EURO 2008 in Switzerland and Austria. ” But that will only happen if I play regularity for my club.”
