Ecuador face almost certain elimination from the Copa América 2007, after <L CODE="C01">Edison Mendez</L> and his team mates slipped to their second successive group stage defeat. Mendez scored a consolation in Ecuador’s 2-1 defeat against Mexico. The Ecuadorians can only book a place in the quarter-finals, if they beat Brazil in Wednesday’s final group game and if Mexico, who have already made sure of a place in the last eight, are beaten by Chili. Nery Castillo opened the scoring for Mexico after 21 minutes. Although it was an equally-contested match, Omar Bravo doubled Mexico’s advantage ten minutes from time. Edison Mendez pulled one back in the 84th minute, but Ecuador could not snatch a late draw. Brazil coasted to a comfortable 3-0 win over Chili in the other Group B game. Real Madrid striker Robinho bagged all three goals, the first from a spot kick. Alex played the entire game. So PSV team mates <L CODE="C02">Alex</L> and Mendez will face one another in Puerto La Cruz on Wednesday.
