PSV MEDIA - Phillip Cocu will continue his career in the Middle East. The former PSV captain, who fittingly scored the winning goal in the final round of the 2006-2007 season, clinching the title in the most exciting end to a Dutch football season in the history of the game, confirmed to PSV Media that he is going to sign a one-year deal with Al-Jazeera from Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.
“I am ready to put pen to paper on a one-year contract”, told 36-year-old Cocu PSV Media at noon, ending all speculation on the future of the midfielder who has won 101 caps for his country. Cocu had refused to continue his career in Australia and has now shelved his original plan to retire from professional football.
Cocu will join the Al Jazira Club, as they are officially called. They were founded in 1974 and the African star George Weah is one of their best-known players. Former Rumanian international Laszlo Bölöni takes charge at Al-Jazeera, and the Jazira Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium will be extended to a capacity of over 40,000 shortly.
Cocu will join fellow countryman Abe Knoop, who is goalkeeping coach Al-Jazeera. Knoop was goalkeeping coach and assistant coach at Vitesse at the same time Cocu plied his trade in Arnhem. Cocu had already intimated in an interview with the Dutch football magazine Voetbal International that he was looking forward to a new challenge abroad. “I will not play in a major league, but I would like to take up a new challenge”.
