John Leijten, national coach of the Amsterdam Admirals American football-team, was at the PSV training ground De Herdgang for two days this week to watch some training sessions and discuss training methods with the PSV coaching staff.Leijten, a celebrity in the American football-world, has been coach at the Admirals for many years. He is very much interested in training methods from other sports and loves to meet people who would like to share their expertise with him. Thus he spoke with PSV trainer Fred Rutten and PSV fitness coach Luc van Agt after Tuesday’s training session about movement skills, electronic tools and match preparations in football. In American football, electronic communication in the pitch and from the stands, video taping of all training sessions and a screen for the referee to rectify decisions have been widely accepted for years. As a player Leijten was formidable in the heart of defence (1988-1990); he won the Dutch title in 1988 after an unbeaten run. Leijten earned a great reputation as coach of, among other clubs, the Tilburg Steelers and the Cologne Crocodiles. When he was in charge at Tilburg, his team won the Dutch title in 1991 and 1992 and they reached the finals in 1994. He was also successful as coach of the Crocodiles: they earned the German title in 2000 under his supervision. He now coaches the Dutch players at the Admirals and scouts young talented players.
