Ronald Koeman's plans to treat the crowd to an entertaining and action-packed game did not materialise, but the PSV head coach was content with his team's 3-0 win over Willem II. Willem II coach Dennis van Wijk frankly admitted that his side had not stood a chance. 'We have worked our socks off, but leave empty-handed from here.'

'We wanted to come out and play attacking football, closing down their defence', explained Koeman at the post-match press conference. 'But actually we put in a rather average display. We could not fulfil our promises. We may have lacked sharpness tonight after we were forced to dig deep in a tough European game earlier this week. Of course we gladly settle for a 3-0 win. We capitalized on some sloppy defending. Although we did not play really well, we should have scored two or three more goals. We could have done better tonight, but what's the use of complaining when you end a hectic week with a win?'

Willem II coach Dennis van Wijk missed several first-team regulars, including Bobson, Boutahar and Douglas. 'And we were already facing an uphill task on our trip to the defending champions. We constantly lost possession of the ball, as they closed us down quickly. And just when we thought we were gaining some control over the game, we conceded the opening goal. And on the close of half time we were again clumsily dispossessed. Trailing 2-0 at half time, we realised it would be a mission impossible. After the break they scored from a free kick and we were dead and buried. We have worked our socks off, but yet we leave empty-handed from here.'
