Serbia's slim hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 are over, after they drew 2-2 with Group A winners Poland in Belgrade on Wednesday night. The visitors had taken a two-goal lead, when Serbia staged a brave comeback. PSV striker Danko Lazovic scored the equaliser after 70 minutes, but it was not enough to book a place at next summer's tournament.
Mika Väyrynen's Finland also failed to qualify. Portugal, who drew 0-0 at home against Finland, secured the point they needed to get through to the Euro 2008 finals. Belgium, who had already been eliminated, beat Azerbaijan 1-0 in the other Group A final qualifying match.
Finland could have advanced to the Euro 2008 finals, if they had earned a win over Portugal, but were held to a goalless draw in Porto. Portugal finish second, one point behind winners Poland, coached by Leo Beenhakker.
Serbia's qualifier against Kazakhstan, which was postponed on Saturday due to heavy snow in the Serbian capital and rescheduled for Sunday, is no longer relevant. If the final qualifier is abandoned altogether, Lazovic may start for PSV in Saturday's domestic league game against Excelsior in Rotterdam.
